In celebration of Southwestern Ontario and its rich agricultural and culinary traditions, the WordsFest Zine invites submissions of poetry, graphic art (drawing and comics), prose, creative nonfiction, and hybrids on the theme of Southwestern Ontario food. Submissions may address, but are not limited to:
Agriculture Food and the environment Food and history Food and personal history Food and identity Food and culture The politics of food Food and memory In Corporal Cameron of the Northwest Mounted Police, Ralph Connor, the best-selling Canadian novelist of the first decades of the 20th century, observed that “the district of which the little city of London was the centre was the very garden of Canada.” The identity of this region has always been and remains bound up with a rich agricultural tradition that reaches from the present back to its original Indigenous inhabitants, and likewise with the food that countless generations have produced. We invite writers to explore the relationship between Southwestern Ontario and food in all of its complexity. Consider your own history or the history of the region. Come to the festival and listen to the writers. Try the food from the local food trucks outside the museum. And write about it. We are looking for writing that is impressive, surprising and as satisfying as a good meal with friends. All submissions should be under 500 words and graphic art should be no more than two pages. Send submissions to: wordsfestzine@gmail.com All submissions should be under 500 words and graphic art should be no more than two pages. WordsFest produces an instant magazine called WordsFestZine. Anyone could submit work for publication. The work has to be related to WordsFest and our theme. It could be a reaction to a reading, event, an author, a happening, the contours of the day, anything that was brought about in contact with the Festival. In the great tradition of occasional writing, WordsFestZine documents, analyzes and celebrates the events, people and works that make up the festival as it is happening. The publication is a partnership between Insomniac Press, Poetry London and WordsFest. Download a PDF of the zine.
